Can online PDF tools see my files?
If the tool uploads your file — then technically yes. Processing a PDF requires reading it, so during the job and the retention window your document exists on the company's servers in readable form. Reputable services promise (and have every incentive) not to look, and to delete it promptly. But the capability exists; you're trusting a policy.
Browser-based tools are the exception: the file is processed by your own browser on your own device and is never transmitted, so there is nothing on any server to see. Most of mypdf's tools work this way — our site, bias disclosed.
Encryption in transit isn't encryption in processing
The padlock in your address bar protects the file on its way to the server — nobody on the network can read it. But servers can't process what they can't read: on arrival, the file is decrypted and handled in plain form by the conversion software. That's not sloppiness; it's how processing works, everywhere.
So 'we use encryption' on a PDF site's homepage answers a different question than 'can you see my file'. The honest answer for every upload-based service is: during processing, the file is readable on our machines, and our policy is not to look and to delete it.
The offline test
There's a simple way to verify a tool's claim that files stay on your device: load the tool's page, turn off your Wi-Fi, and run the job. If it completes, no upload happened — there was nowhere to upload to. mypdf's in-browser tools pass this test; upload-based tools stop at the progress bar.
Open-source helps too: mypdf's code is public, so 'the file never leaves your browser' is checkable in the source rather than taken on faith.
