How to remove a password from a PDF

If you already know a PDF's password but you're tired of typing it on every open, you can save a copy with the password stripped out. This only works on files you can legitimately open.

Open Unlock PDF

Step by step

  1. 1Open the Unlock PDF tool and drop the protected file in.
  2. 2Enter the current password so the tool can decrypt it.
  3. 3Download the unlocked copy — it opens with no prompt.

Why you need the current password

Unlocking isn't cracking. The tool decrypts the file using the password you provide, then writes a fresh copy without one. If you don't know the password, there's no way through — that's by design.

This is the normal case for your own documents: a bank statement or invoice that arrives locked with a password you already have.

Keep one protected copy

If the document is sensitive, hold on to the original protected version rather than replacing it. Use the unlocked copy only where the convenience is worth it.

To lock a file back up later, the Protect PDF tool adds a new password to any PDF.

FAQ

Can I unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?
No. You need the current password — the file is truly encrypted, so a forgotten password can't be bypassed.
Is my password or file kept?
No. The file is processed in a temporary folder and deleted right after, and the password isn't stored.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free, with no account.
